Manual handling courses

Manual handling means transporting or supporting a load by hand or bodily force. It includes lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving loads. A load can be an object, person or animal. Manual Handling Training is a course designed to give you the understanding and knowledge of why manual handling is important to you. The role and responsibilities of employers and employees. The training will highlight the difference between manual handling and manual tasks. What type of injuries can occur, the factors involved, and finally, how to reduce the risk of injury.

Why is manual handling training important?

It’s estimated that 21% of all non-fatal workplace injuries are attributable to manual handling injuries and that a third of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are also caused through manual handling activities. Our manual handling training courses are designed to help minimise the incidence of MSDs, reduce the risk of injury to your employees and increase productivity through absence avoidance.

Is manual handling a legal requirement?

As an employer, you must protect your workers from the risk of injury associated with hazardous manual handling. Although manual handling training is not mandatory for all employees, the law sets out how employers must deal with the risks associated with manual handling through:

  • Avoiding hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable

  • Assessing the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided

  • Reducing the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling to as low as reasonably practicable
